The Ultimate Pacific Northwest Weekend Getaway - No PTO Required

Leavenworth, Washington is truly an amazing place for a weekend getaway, or even a day trip from Seattle. At just over two hours from the westside and a few hours from Eastern Washington and Spokane, it feels like you’re truly in the mountains, surrounded by stunning peaks, a Bavarian theme, and with so many amazing outdoorsy adventures to explore.

From hikes to alpine lakes in the Enchantments, and rock climbing to relaxing spas, Bavarian brats, and everything in between, this guide goes into how we love to spend a weekend in our favorite Washington mountain town. And, we know you will love it here too.

We've been making the trip from Seattle for years, first for the climbing and hiking, and eventually for everything else this little Bavarian mountain town has to offer. These days it's our home base when we're in Washington (our home state), and honestly, Leavenworth has just about every outdoor activity we could want.

The best part? You don't need to use any PTO to make the trip worth it. Leave straight from work on Friday, and you're pulling into town before dark, just in time for dinner and a night out in town. Two nights is the perfect amount of time to fully experience the area, to day hike, float the river, explore town, have some beers and brats, and still make it home by Sunday night.

We've hiked nearly every trail close to town, climbed numerous multipitch routes in Icicle Creek Canyon, backpacked through the Enchantments multiple times, and just can’t get enough of this amazing part of Washington. Yes, it's a touristy town — but that's part of the charm, and trust us, you can still escape the crowds when you know where to go.

This is the itinerary we love when we’re in town, and it’s the perfect mix of outdoors and experiencing downtown. There is so much to experience that it can be hard to narrow down what you want to do, so use this guide to help plan your trip. We know you will love Leavenworth as much as we do!

Leavenworth, the Bavarian Village in the Heart of the Cascades

Tucked into the eastern slopes of the Cascades along the Wenatchee River, Leavenworth reinvented itself as a Bavarian-themed village in the 1960s after the railroad pulled out and the town needed a reason to survive. It worked, maybe a little too well.

These days it draws visitors from across the Pacific Northwest and beyond, and while yes, it is touristy, the mountain town setting makes the town special.

Where is Leavenworth, Washington & How Do You Get There?

Leavenworth sits on the eastern slopes of the Cascades in Chelan County, about 120 miles east of Seattle. Highway 2 over Stevens Pass is one of the most scenic routes in Washington, winding through old growth forest, past other small towns and the ski resort, before dropping into the drier, sunnier east side of the Cascades.

Getting to Leavenworth from Seattle and Western Washington

From Seattle, the drive is about 2-2.5 hours via US-2 east, over Stevens Pass. Our tip: leave straight from work on Friday. You'll get through the city faster than you think, avoid the morning traffic, and pull into town with enough time for dinner and a beer.

Getting to Leavenworth from Eastern Washington and Spokane

Coming from Spokane or the Tri-Cities, you're about 3.5 hours coming west on US-2. The approach from Wenatchee is a completely different experience than coming over Stevens Pass, but still a pretty drive — high desert and apple orchards giving way to the dramatic drop into the Wenatchee Valley.

    Parking and Getting Around Leavenworth

Downtown Leavenworth is very walkable once you’ve found a parking spot. Parking can be tough on busy summer weekends, so try to arrive early if you’re not staying at a hotel in town.

There is street parking and pay lots just off the main street, and arriving early in the morning will really help you get a good spot. Once you're in town, you won't need your car again until it's time to head out for a hike.

And, since you’re coming for a full weekend, you will be able to stay parked at your hotel (free parking is usually included) and walk into town. All of the hotels we recommend are within walking distance to downtown Leavenworth.

The Best Time to Visit Leavenworth, WA

Leavenworth is an amazing destination year-round, but for an outdoorsy weekend focused on hiking, climbing, and getting into the mountains, spring and summer are the best for good weather windows and when trails will be (mostly) snow free.

This guide is focused on spring and summer, our favorite time to visit, and when the wildflowers will be blooming on trails and in town. But, Leavenworth is a great destination any time of year, fall brings golden larch hikes and Oktoberfest, and winter has a Christmas tree lighting and lots of festivities.

If you're planning a fall or winter trip, we'll have dedicated guides for those seasons too (coming soon).

Spring in Leavenworth: Wildflowers, Fewer Crowds, & One of Our Favorite Seasons to Visit

If you can visit in May or June, plan your trip then, spring is one of our favorite times to be in town. The crowds are a lot thinner, the temperatures are perfect for hiking and climbing, and the hillsides around town come alive with wildflower hikes.

The higher elevation trails and the core Enchantments won't be fully open yet, but the lower trails around town will be in prime condition and honestly are more beautiful in spring. This is also the best window for rock climbing and bouldering in Leavenworth before the summer heat really sets in.

Summer in Leavenworth: Peak Season for Hiking, Adventures, & Time in Town

July through September is when Leavenworth is at its peak for hiking and time in town, and is a very popular time to visit. Every trail is open, the Enchantments permit season is in full swing, and water activities on the river make for a great way to cool off mid-day.

The town will be busy, on weekends especially, so book lodging well ahead of time, and plan to hit the trails early for any hikes. One thing worth noting: Leavenworth sits in a rain shadow east of the Cascades and is far from the ocean, which means warmer temperatures than on the west side. Afternoon temps in July and August can push into the 90s.

Start your hikes early, bring sun protection, and save your time in town for the afternoon when it's hottest.

What to Expect From Leavenworth's Weather

Leavenworth gets significantly more sun than Seattle, it's one of the reasons we love having our home base here. But being in the Cascade mountains means early mornings and nights can be cool even in midsummer, and conditions change fast at elevation. We always recommend some layers for both hikes and in town if you are walking around at night, regardless of what the forecast says.

Between the two of us, we've hiked nearly every trail around the Leavenworth area, from quick morning hikes for training, to multi-day backpacking trips into the Enchantments. The hiking here is absolutely amazing, and one of the main reasons we love spending time here.

Below are some of our favorite hikes in and around Leavenworth, along with when the best time to hike them is. If you are visiting in the spring, make sure to check out our guide on the Best Wildflower Hikes Near Leavenworth.

The Enchantments: Leavenworth's Crown Jewel in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness

18+ Miles Thru Hike | 4,500' Elevation Gain | Best Season: Summer

You probably already know about backpacking the Enchantments, but did you know you can do the full thru hike, otherwise known as the Enchantments Traverse in a day? That may be a bit much for your weekend itinerary, but if you’re an avid hiker or trail runner, we highly recommend adding it to your list. It will take a full day, most people do it in 12+ hours, so plan accordingly.

This permit-only (for backpacking) alpine zone above Leavenworth is one of the most stunning landscapes in the entire state — granite peaks, turquoise lakes, and mountain goats wandering through like they own the place. We've backpacked through the Core Enchantments multiple times and it never gets old. Permits are competitive in the spring lottery, so plan well ahead. If you can't snag an overnight permit, the day hike to Colchuck Lake is still stunning on its own, and if you have the time, the full Enchantments day hike is worth it if you are in great hiking shape.

Colchuck Lake: The Most Beautiful Day Hike Near Leavenworth

8 Miles Round Trip | 2,280' Elevation Gain | Best Season: Summer

Colchuck Lake is our go-to recommendation for anyone visiting Leavenworth for the first time and wanting a taste of the Enchantments zone without an overnight permit. Four miles (one way) in to a stunning glacial lake sitting below Dragontail Peak. It’s probably what you think of when hearing the Enchantments.

It is worth noting that this is a VERY popular day hike, and we always recommend going on weekdays if possible. But if you can only go on a weekend, be ready for crowds, and make sure to recreate responsibly and pack out everything you pack in. This trail has been getting more and more traffic and gets trashed by irresponsible hikers, so please do your part to Leave No Trace, pack out everything you pack in, and keep the trail and lake clean as possible.

Go early on summer weekends, the parking lot fills fast (usually by 7am) and the trail gets busy by mid-morning. By starting early we really mean before sunrise. Or try for sunset since a lot of hikers will leave later in the day. For more information on this trail, check out our hiking guide on Colchuck.

Icicle Ridge View Point: Big Views & Wildflowers Without the Crowds

4.8 Round Trip | 1,800’ Elevation Gain | Best Season: Spring for Wildflowers

Icicle Ridge is a hike we do every time we are in Leavenworth, though still well known, it’s a little more off the beaten path than Colchuck. It’s also half the distance, so perfect as a morning hike if you still want time in town the same day. The trail climbs above Icicle Creek Canyon, with sweeping views of the valley and the peaks beyond, and in spring the wildflowers on the ridge are stunning.

It's become one of our favorite morning hikes when we're based in Leavenworth, because it’s great for training and still gets you mountain views.

3.5 Miles Round Trip | 476' Elevation Gain | Best Season: Spring for Wildflowers & Summer

The Canyon Crest Trail to Rat Creek loop is an awesome short and easy hike, and great for families. It’s one we love in the spring for wildflowers, and there are usually only a couple other local hikers on the trail.

It doesn't get the same attention as Colchuck or Icicle Ridge, which means you'll often have the trail mostly to yourself even on a busy summer weekend. The views are excellent and the wildflowers in spring are some of the best in the area. If you're looking for a quieter morning in the mountains, this is our pick.

Olalla Canyon Ridge: The Best Wildflower Hike Near Leavenworth

2.6 Miles Round Trip | 524' Elevation Gain | Best Season: Spring

Just outside of Cashmere, Washington and a short drive from Leavenworth, Olalla Canyon Ridge is our top wildflower recommendation in the entire area, but it’s also great outside of wildflower season as well.

Short enough for an afternoon hike with beautiful views, the ridgeline explodes with balsamroot and lupine during peak wildflower season in the spring. Go on a weekday if you can — the parking lot holds only four cars and fills up very fast on spring weekends.

If you plan to do this hike, please make sure to read our full guide on it as there are a lot of issues during peak spring season with hikers going off trail, hiking onto private property, and getting cars towed when parked along the road.

    More Wildflower Hikes Near Leavenworth

Spring in Leavenworth is such an amazing time for wildflower hiking, and if you haven’t done a wildflower hike in this area, add the seven in our wildflower hiking guide to your list. The hillsides around town fill with balsamroot and lupine blooms from late April through early June, and the lower elevation trails are in perfect condition before it gets too hot.

We have a full guide centered around the Best Wildflower Hikes Near Leavenworth that goes in-depth on all of the best hikes for spring, along with information on responsible hiking and what to pack. If you're planning a spring visit, you’re going to want to plan your whole weekend around all of these wildflower hikes.

Rock Climbing in Leavenworth: Icicle Canyon & Tumwater Canyon Climbing and Bouldering

Leavenworth is one of Washington's premier climbing destinations, and it's a big part of why we started coming here together when we first started dating. Icicle Creek Canyon has both sport and trad cragging and multipitches for just about every ability level. And the bouldering is world class and all over the area.

Tumwater Canyon, just west of town on Highway 2, also has great routes at Castle Rock as well. If you are looking for easily accessible boulders, there are a lot along the river in Tumwater Canyon, just steps from the parking areas.

And if you’re looking for alpine climbs, there are a ton in and around the Enchantments. We have spent a lot of time alpine climbing in this area and have climbed Prusik Peak a few times when we had core permits, and I also climbed Colchuck Peak my first year in the alpine.

The best season for climbing in Leavenworth is spring or fall, before it gets too hot in the summer. Bouldering is still good in summer though since you can find shady areas in the forest. If climbing is on your weekend agenda, plan for a spring visit or get on the wall early in the morning to beat the heat.

If you want to try out rock climbing, while you’re in town, but don’t have experience, you can go guided.

On the Wenatchee River: Rafting, Floating, and Kayaking in Leavenworth

The Wenatchee River runs right through town and it's one of the best ways to beat the heat in summer. We did a whitewater rafting trip on the Wenatchee a few years back and it was so much fun. It’s also a great option on rainy days in the spring since you will get wet no matter what.

The river has sections and activities for all levels, from floating the river through town, to white water kayaking on Icicle. Several outfitters in town make it easy to book activities without any gear of your own. When the summer heats up, this is a great way to cool off and still spend time outside.

Leavenworth Adventure Park & the Tumwater Twister Mountain Coaster (Perfect for Families)

We'll be honest, the Leavenworth Adventure Park isn't really our scene, but if you're visiting with family or just want something fun between hikes, it really looks like a blast. We've watched the Tumwater Twister alpine coaster wind around the hill above town, and the kids will love it.

The small adventure park also has a mini climbing wall for kids and a mining sluice. It comes up constantly when we talk to other visitors with kids about what they loved most about their trip. In the summers there is usually a long line to get in, so arrive early if you can.

Ziplining Over the Cascades at Leavenworth Ziplines (Perfect for Families)

A completely different experience from the adventure park and in a totally different location, Leavenworth Ziplines is based at Mountain Springs Lodge, about 25 minutes northwest of downtown Leavenworth. They offer 5-line and 9-line tour options, zipping up to 190 feet over the Beaver Creek Valley with views of the surrounding Cascades.

Tours are guided, groups are capped at 8, and reservations are strongly recommended. The views along make this an amazing experience for the whole family.

Mountain Biking at the Leavenworth Ski Hill

The ski hill turns into a mountain biking venue in summer and it's worth a visit if you love mountain biking. Trails run across a range of difficulty levels and the views from the hill over the valley are excellent. It's also a solid option for a Friday evening after you've arrived in town — a quick lap on the bike is a great way to shake off the drive before dinner.

We visited The Springs for the first time this year and fell in love with the calming vibes and nature feel. They did host us, but this is an experience we will recommend again and again. We loved everything about our afternoon here, from doing the full sauna, cold plunge, to hot tub circuit, to relaxing by the outdoor fire and drinking tea. If you only do one non-hike/outdoorsy thing on this trip, make it a relaxing trip to The Springs.

The Springs includes both hot and warm soaking pools, a cold plunge pool, and a sauna, in a small but beautiful outdoor setting. Especially after a long hike or to detox after a night at the brewery, this is always a really wonderful and relaxing experience.

The Best of Downtown Leavenworth, Washington

    Mainstreet in downtown Leavenworth

    Downtown Leavenworth on a weekght

The mountains and outdoor activities are amazing, but downtown Leavenworth is worth the trip on its own. Downtown Leavenworth is cute with its Bavarian-themed buildings, fun shops, good food and drinks, and even a weekend art market in the summer. Here's what we actually do when we're in town.

Eat a Brat: The Leavenworth Experience You Can't Skip

Bavarian food including bratwursts, soft pretzels and beer

Lunch at München Haus after a morning hike

In all honesty, we love getting brats (vegetarian options too) every time we are in Leavenworth, it’s a big part of the experience you just can’t skip. There are a lot of places to grab brats in town, but we love the outdoor space at München Haus.

Like we said above, München Haus has been our go-to for YEARS. It’s an outdoor beer garden right in the heart of town with a large selection of sausages, amazing, warm sauerkraut, tons of different mustards and sauces, and local craft beer on tap. They actually have good vegetarian options too, and we also love their pretzel with beer cheese. It's casual, affordable, and eating outside with a cold beer after a long hike is the best.

Andreas Keller is worth a visit too if you want the full sit-down Bavarian experience, complete with live accordion music and schnitzel. Either way, come hungry.

Breweries and Wine Tasting in Leavenworth

Leavenworth is well known for its local breweries and Washington wine, and stopping for both a wine tasting and some beer is a must-do when in town. We have our go-to spots every time we visit, and our new favorite winery (Patterson Cellars Tasting Room) was recommended by our friends who live in town.

Icicle Brewing is our usual stop for beers post hike or climb — they have so many different types of beer on tap, including seasonal rotations, and a fun vibe with live music on summer nights. Blewitt Brewing Company is another great option right in downtown and they make amazing pizzas. We also love Bushel & Bee Taproom (also recommended by Leavenworth locals) for a huge selection of beer, cider, and wine from around Washington and beyond. It has a laid back vibe and even has live music on some nights.

For wine, there are tons of tasting rooms within walking distance of Front Street, which makes for an easy Saturday afternoon, after your morning hike. All of the wineries in the area offer wine tasting, wine flights, and wine by the glass. I even did a wine mixing class at Goose Ridge several years ago that was a lot of fun.

Our favorite wine shops in town are the Patterson Cellars Tasting Room, Goose Ridge Tasting Room, and the Rocky Pond Estate Winery, located on site of the Icicle Village Resort.

Walk Along the Wenatchee River at the Waterfront Park (Perfect for Families)

The waterfront park is easy to overlook when you're focused on food and beer, but the walking paths and trails along the Wenatchee River is one of our favorite spots in town to get into nature without leaving town. Perfect for families since the trails are flat and there are bridges across parts of the river.

black and white drawing of Leavenworth Waterfront Park

This is also where you can float the river and paddle board around Blackbird Island. And, on summer evenings the park is a great spot for amazing sunsets.

Stroll Through Downtown and Visit Local Shops

Leavenworth's Front Street and downtown is worth some time for walking the streets and checking out shops with locally made goods, especially in the evening when the Bavarian-style buildings are lit up.

Pop into cute shops, grab a coffee or a pastry, and just enjoy the town. Sure, it is touristy, but the Bavarian theme is also really fun to experience. As Washington locals who call Leavenworth our home base, we've made peace with the crowds and learned to just enjoy the atmosphere for what it is. Early mornings and weekday evenings are the sweet spot if you want it a little quieter.

Where to Stay in Leavenworth, WA

Where you stay in Leavenworth shapes the whole feel of your weekend. In-town puts you within walking distance to restaurants, breweries, and the river — ideal if you want to walk everywhere and not think about driving after drinks. Further out along Icicle Road gets you closer to the trailheads and a quieter, more nature-immersive and relaxed experience.

The Enzian Inn: Best Hotel in Downtown Leavenworth & Our Top Pick

A Great Stay for Both Families & Couples

The Enzian Inn is by far our top pick for a classic Leavenworth weekend, we’ve stayed here multiple times and we love it. It's a Bavarian themed hotel but in a very nice way, beautifully maintained, walkable to everything downtown, and with free parking which matters more than you'd think on a busy summer weekend.

The breakfast alone is worth staying here for, it's the best hotel breakfast we've had anywhere in the US, and it's included in your stay. Add in a newly renovated outdoor pool and hot tub with mountain views and a genuine mountain lodge atmosphere, and it's hard to want to stay anywhere else. Book well ahead for summer weekends, this place is popular for a reason. It’s also family friendly and has an indoor pool as well if weather isn’t good.

The Perfect Stay for Couples and Special Occasions

If you want something further from the crowds and closer to the mountains, the Sleeping Lady is a very special experience and perfect for couples looking for a romantic getaway. I’ve stayed here while on a trip with friends and it is a really beautiful location — a luxury mountain resort tucked into the forest along Icicle Creek that somehow feels completely secluded while being just minutes from town.

The setting is stunning, the rooms are comfortable, and the whole place has a peaceful, away-from-it-all energy that's hard to find this close to a popular destination. It's a splurge, but if you're celebrating an anniversary or special occasion, or just want to treat yourselves, this is the most amazing option for a couples weekend.

The Perfect Leavenworth Weekend Itinerary — Friday to Sunday

This is the exact itinerary we love for a long weekend in Leavenworth. It’s perfect for experiencing hikes in the area and getting plenty of time in town, including three days and two nights. This itinerary is built around leaving straight from work on Friday, a full day outside on Saturday, and a relaxed half day Sunday before heading home. But you can add more days and add in more activities from the lists above if needed.

It's the perfect weekend getaway for anyone short on vacation days but still craving a real mountain escape. You don't need this exact schedule to make it work, though, shift it to any three days of the week to fit your trip plan, and the same idea applies: arrive, get outside and enjoy the town, and then relax and enjoy before you go.

Friday Afternoon/Evening - Arrive in Leavenworth and Get Dinner

Leave work, drive to town, and you'll be in Leavenworth in about two and a half hours from Seattle (or about three hours from Eastern Washington and Spokane). Check into your hotel or campground and then head into town for dinner and drinks.

Plenty of restaurants and breweries around Leavenworth bring in live, local music on Friday nights through spring and summer, so it's worth wandering Front Street to see what's going on and who’s playing before you settle on a spot. A brat and a local beer with some music in the background is the perfect start to your Leavenworth weekend.

Our Top Picks for Friday Night in Town:

    Colchuck Lake just before sunrise

Saturday - A Full Day of Hiking and Outdoor Adventure

Saturday is the heart of this outdoorsy Leavenworth itinerary, and it's built around hiking (or climbing) in the morning, then spending some time in town and on the river since it will be getting pretty warm mid-day. You can also swap the river float for more time in town with wine tasting and shopping if you prefer.

Saturday Morning: Hit the Trail for a Hike or Trail Run

If you have the time for a longer hike, Colchuck Lake is our top recommendation for a hike near town — plan for 4 to 6 hours depending on fitness level, and start VERY early (6-7am) to beat both the heat and the crowds.

If you want something shorter, with less of a time commitment and a much shorter drive, Icicle Ridge above town is a fantastic alternative with mountain and town views for a fraction of the effort.

Saturday Afternoon: Lunch and Time on the Water

Head back to town for a quick lunch, München Haus is perfect for this, if you didn’t go here for dinner the night before. As temperatures rise in the afternoon, it’s time to get on the Wenatchee River. Floating is the easy, low-effort option to cool off after a hot hike, or if you'd rather have a more active afternoon, mountain biking at Leavenworth Ski Hill is a great alternative, and still gives you time for a quick dip in the river afterwards.

Saturday Evening: Dinner, Drinks, and Sunset in Town

After your afternoon activities, head back into downtown Leavenworth for dinner and drinks. If the timing lines up, walk down to the park along the Wenatchee River and catch the sunset — it's one of our favorite ways to finish off a day in the mountains.

Pair your evening with a beer from one of the local breweries to finish off your Saturday.

Start your morning with coffee in town (our favorite spot is Argonaut Coffee and Biscuits), then head to The Springs for a hot spring soak and cold plunge — it's the ideal way to unwind sore legs after a full day outside and ease into your last few hours in Leavenworth.

From there, grab lunch and spend some time wandering the shops downtown before starting your drive back home. Aim to leave by early afternoon to beat the worst of the Sunday traffic on Highway 2 if you’re heading back to the west side of the state.

Frequently Asked Questions About a Leavenworth Weekend Getaway

How far is Leavenworth, WA from Seattle?

Leavenworth is about 120 miles east of Seattle, roughly a 2.5-hour drive via US-2 over Stevens Pass. The drive itself is part of the experience, with scenic mountain views the whole way.

How many days do you need in Leavenworth?

A weekend is enough to get a real taste of what Leavenworth has to offer. Two nights and three days — arriving Friday evening and leaving Sunday afternoon — gives you a full day of hiking and outdoor adventure plus time to enjoy the town without feeling rushed.

What is there to do in Leavenworth besides hiking?

Plenty. Rock climbing in Icicle and Tumwater Canyons, floating or rafting the Wenatchee River, mountain biking at the ski hill, the Leavenworth Adventure Park and mountain coaster, ziplining, soaking at The Springs, plus breweries, wine tasting, and a downtown full of Bavarian charm.

Is Leavenworth worth visiting in spring?

Absolutely — spring is one of our favorite times to visit. Wildflowers bloom on the hillsides around town from late April through early June, crowds are noticeably thinner than summer, and it's the best season for rock climbing before the heat sets in.

Do I need a permit to hike near Leavenworth?

Overnight permits are required for the Enchantments and are notoriously competitive, so plan months ahead if that's on your list. Most day hikes near Leavenworth only require a Northwest Forest pass or America the Beautiful pass for trailhead parking.

How hot does it get in Leavenworth in the summer?

It gets genuinely hot. Leavenworth sits in a rain shadow east of the Cascades, and afternoon temperatures in July and August can push into the 90s, especially in the Icicle drainage. Start hikes early and plan water-based activities for the hottest part of the day.

Is Leavenworth family-friendly for a weekend trip?

Very much so. The downtown area is fully walkable, the Adventure Park and mountain coaster are great for families, and there are easy hikes and river activities suitable for all ages.

When should I book lodging for a Leavenworth weekend?

Book early, at least a few weeks ahead for a spring weekend, and even further out (a month or more) for summer or if you're eyeing somewhere popular like the Enzian Inn or Sleeping Lady Mountain Resort. Lodging fills up fast during peak seasons like summer, during Oktoberfest, and in the winter.

Final Thoughts on Visiting Leavenworth Washington for a Weekend Adventure

I first visited Leavenworth as a kid, then started coming back as an adult for weekend getaways, and eventually for alpine climbing and backpacking. It’s such a special place and you will love visiting.

Over the past few years, I’ve now spent months in and around town, and really can’t recommend it enough for outdoor lovers. The town is cute, but the recreation in the area is what keeps us coming back, and I hope you will too. This is a fun weekend destination, but I have a feeling you'll want more time here.
