One Month of Full-Time VanLife Check-In

VanLife

Anza Borrego State Park

We have been on the road for just over a month now and time is flying by so fast. In one month we have already seen so much and gotten to climb in some amazing areas.

Full-time van life is treating us well and we are enjoying time in our little van. Spending everyday outside has been amazing and I love that we are getting to travel as slow as we want. So far we have only paid for camping in two locations (Red Rock Canyon and Yosemite) since it made it a lot easier to be closer to climbing. But it has been easy to find free disbursed camping all along the way.

A lot of friends have asked us what has been unexpected so far living on the road, and it has been hard for us to answer. We’ve had our van since October of 2019 and have taken multiple week long road trips in it, so we really knew what we were getting ourselves into when we went full time. But I will say we are learning things along the way as well, including the fact that with the right care, I can go up to 11 days without washing my hair. Also, we have been surprised by the hospitality of people, both friends and strangers. Beth, a friend from my time at Outdoor Research, letting us stay on her property for a few nights so we didn’t have to pay for camping the entire time we were there. And even now as I am writing this, Garrett was talking with Jonah (a brand new acquaintance) at a bouldering area who offered us to come to the private campground he works at two fill up our water. Jonah also ended up showing us around the local boulders and climbing with us for a couple of hours. And even all of our friends before we left Seattle, coming to our going away party and gifting us money for showers along the road.

Sunset at Joshua Tree

Joshua Tree National Park

Here is our itinerary thus far in late March and April:

  • Drive from Seattle down the Oregon and Northern California coast

  • Spent a week in Joshua Tree National Park

  • Camped and cannoned for a weekend in Anza Borrego State Park

  • Went back to Joshua Tree for a few more days

  • Spent two days in the Mojave Desert National Preserve on our way to Las Vegas

  • Climbed with friends for a week and a half in Red Rock Canyon

  • Drove to Death Valley for 24 hours on our way to Yosemite

  • Spent a week climbing in Yosemite

  • Headed back to Red Rock Canyon after Yosemite closed parts of the valley for flooding, and spent a few more days climbing there

  • Now we are in Prescott, AZ, a place we had never been that has a cute town and lots of bouldering

Next we are planning for an adventure in the Grand Canyon, and then heading to Zion for canyoning after that. Stay tuned for more adventures and itineraries.
