Johnny Vegas - 5.7 trad, 4 pitches

This year I received a Live Your Dream Grant from The American Alpine Club to climb a four pitch trad route in Red Rock just outside of Las Vegas, and this past month my partner Garrett and I headed to Nevada to make it happen.

On Monday, October 24th I climbed Johnny Vegas, a 5.7 trad multipitch in Oak Creek Canyon, NV. This climb had been on my list for a few years ever since climbing Solar Slab as a newer trad leader and seeing climbers on the exposed face to my left. After a couple years of not being in a good enough head space to push my trad grade, this year I was able to onsight 5.7 and above on gear and knew it was time to check off Johnny Vegas.

Leading the first pitch was wonderful, great placements and buggy holds, but some of the most exposed trad climbing I have done to date. When I got to the first belay, it felt like a huge accomplishment for me to feel that confident leading 5.7 trad in Red Rock. The entire route was a blast, and I’m so glad I was able to climb it with my partner, Garrett Arnold. We enjoyed the view on the Solar Slab Terrace after toping out, and then rappelled the Solar Slab gully. This was definitely a dream of a climb for me, and I am thankful for my Live Your Dream Grant to have helped make it happen.

A huge thank you to The American Alpine Club for making this trip happen, and to Moterra Campervans for being one of our trip sponsors.
